How to Pack for a Long-Distance Move

Long-distance moves can be very different from local moves for a variety of reasons. The number of belongings you have versus the size of the moving truck, distance traveled, and time you spend in transit all play into your moving plan.

This can seem overwhelming for many people, so it's essential to handle the moving process smoothly and efficiently. Here are a few tips to help get you started:

Simplify

Packing for a long-distance move means deciding how much time and effort certain items deserve versus others. If you have a particular affinity for material possessions, it can be challenging to start this process.

Be honest with yourself about what you need. Part of simplifying includes getting rid of items that aren't practical or don't have much use in the future. By doing so, you won't lug around extraneous objects you never touch anymore.

Choose the Right Packing Materials

When packing for a long-distance move, it is essential to choose suitable packing materials. Remember, you're not driving across the street, so it's important to use sturdy moving boxes and plenty of packing tape.

There are a lot of factors involved in choosing the correct box such as:

  • how heavy your items are
  • how much stuff do you have to pack
  • what types of items do you need to store
  •

If you're driving across the country, choose good quality moving boxes with plenty of reinforcement, durable packing tape that won't break during transit, and bubble wrap envelopes for fragile goods.

Handle Fragile Items With Care

When moving long distances, it's important to handle fragile items with special care by packing them in sturdy bubble wrap envelopes.

When moving, you should use boxes that are designed explicitly for dishware and glassware such as:

  • Mirror Carton: Ideal for heavy and fragile plates and any other type of item breakable.
  • Atlas Telesis Box: Specialty box for dishes, bowls, cups, etc., made of double-walled corrugated board so it's strong enough to hold up under the weight of your heaviest items, but it still has enough flex to prevent damage from strong impact.

These boxes have a higher box fill capacity than traditional moving boxes; we suggest using two or more depending on how much stuff you're storing.

It's essential to be aware of your items throughout your move as much as possible, incredibly fragile items that way they do not break during your move.

Hire a Moving Company

When it comes down to it, moving is one of the most stressful experiences an individual or family can go through. But, by hiring professional movers who know what they're doing and how to do it safely, you'll be able to rest assured that your things are in good hands.
